Baptisms,
Weddings and Funerals
Baptisms
As it says
in the Book of Alternative Services, baptism is "the sign of
new life in Christ. Baptism unites Christ with his people. That
union is both individual and corporate. Christians are, it is true,
baptized one by one, but to be a Christian is to be part of new
creation which rises from the dark waters of Christ's death into
the dawn of his risen life. Christians are not just baptized individuals;
they are a new humanity." The sacrament is available to all
who wish it. It is generally expected that adults desiring baptism
as well as parents of children being baptized will be members of
the Cathedral community. Preparation to receive the sacrament will
involve a few discussions about the Christian faith, as well as
the responsibilities of those being baptized. For more information,
contact the Cathedral office.
Weddings
The Cathedral
is generally available for Holy Matrimony only to members of the
Cathedral parish, or to those with bonds to the parish. We regret
that we cannot make the building available for hire to people not
associated with the Cathedral. As it says in the Book of Alternative
Services, "marriage is a public service of the Church. It should
therefore be solemnized
in the presence of friends and neighbours
of those who come to be married and of the congregation of the Church."
Preparation for the service will involve a few meetings with the
priest who is to perform the ceremony as well as a marriage preparation
course. There are also a number of fees to be paid. For more information
about these details, or to inquire about eligibility to be married
here, please contact the Cathedral office.
Funerals
The Cathedral
is always available for Funerals. To arrange a funeral, please contact
the Cathedral office. It is expected that a funeral conducted at
the Cathedral will follow the rites of the Anglican Church of Canada.
Although there are no formal guidelines beyond this, the priest
officiating will be able to offer guidance and counsel.
